French Toile bench finished in milk paint

Well with the weekend almost coming to the end, I thought I would share with you my recently finished french Toile bench.

I really think I am hooked on milk paint! I have been painting a lot of pieces of furniture and other items around my house lately, so I have been sharing the items that I have finished on here. You can find my tutorial for painting with milk paint here.

Milk paint is one of my go-to finishes as it is so easy to use.

I don’t have any before photos of this little bench but I can tell it you it was pretty boring and a little outdated to start out with. My Mom originally gave me this bench and it was a one of my first furniture refinishing projects many years ago. I had stained it in a cherry stain (yikes!) and covered it in a striped fabric.

This bench was ready for some more pizazz!

After prepping this piece for paint, I added two oval floral appliques to each leg on both the front and back. To give it even more style, I trimmed a piece of decorative moulding to fit each of the sides and secured it with wood glue.

I then gave it two coats of gray primer and two coats of a custom mixed batch of milk paint. A little bit of distressing allowed some of the gray primer to show through in spots. Finally, I coated it with two coats of Polyacrylic to seal it.

What really gave it the “wow” factor for me was using my favorite cream and brown Toile fabric to reupholster the seat!

I just cut the fabric a little larger than the original fabric and stapled it on with a staple gun, making sure I pulled the fabric tight as I went around the bench. The corners of the fabric were mitered to give it a cleaner look. Easy peasy!

I think I am now in love with this little french-inspired bench. Oo La La!

Till next time…
